A Place for Everyone

The Community Hub

The Fleetwood Primary School Community Hub is a space for all members of the school community to meet, connect, share and learn. Our welcoming space offers twice weekly Playgroup, English language classes for adults, food relief and various workshops and classes based on community needs and interests (health, parenting, employment).

Our Hub is child friendly, set up with activities and games for pre-school aged children and babies. Parents and carers can enjoy a cuppa and getting to know others in the school community whilst children play and socialise.

Parents, carers, students, siblings and members of the local community are all welcome in the Hub.

The Hub is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (school terms only) and our Hub Leader Jen Mitchell looks forward to meeting you very soon.

If you have any questions, suggestions or require support please reach out to jen.mitchell@education.vic.gov.au or drop by the Hub (located next to the Gym).

EAL and New Arrival Support

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Support at Fleetwood Primary School

At Fleetwood Primary School, we are proud to offer a dynamic and inclusive EAL Program that supports our students from diverse linguistic backgrounds to thrive both socially and academically. Our program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum EAL Continuum and is designed to meet students at their point of need, whether they are new arrivals or continuing learners.

Students participate in structured EAL sessions each week, focusing on developing essential English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through small group learning, creative projects, and interactive activities, we ensure students build confidence in using English while also valuing and celebrating their home languages.

Our dedicated EAL team includes:

Tracey Melville, our EAL Teacher, who leads targeted language learning and supports students in building foundational literacy and communication skills.

Josie Hallowell, our Art Teacher, who integrates creative expression into the program through art-based storytelling and thematic projects to enhance vocabulary and cultural understanding.

Julu Cham, our Engagement Support Officer, who brings energy and connection to the program by leading fitness and play-based activities that encourage language development through movement and fun.

Kim Aitchison, our integration aide, who brings compassion, care and support to the program, assisting Tracey with the delivery of the curriculum and proving the children with another dedicated advocate.

A key feature of our program is the welcoming Fleetwood EAL Centre—a space co-designed by students and families to reflect the rich cultural diversity of our community. Here, students engage in language learning alongside creative and physical activities that foster friendships, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging.

For new arrivals, we have a structured Induction Process including a multilingual welcome pack, buddy system, guided school tours, and gradual integration into classroom routines. We also partner with families through regular sessions in our Community Hub, where practical English support and community connections are nurtured.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Targeted language sessions led by Tracey, and supported by Kim, tailored to each student’s proficiency level.
  • Creative art projects with Josie, linking language learning to cultural expression.
  • Fitness and fun activities with Julu, using play to build conversational English.
  • Opportunities to celebrate diversity through Cultural Days and community events.
  • Close collaboration with classroom teachers to ensure smooth integration into mainstream learning.

Each student has an individual learning plan, with progress regularly monitored to ensure steady growth in both language skills and confidence.

At Fleetwood, we believe language is the key to connection. Our EAL program not only equips students with the skills to succeed but also celebrates the cultural richness they bring, helping every child feel seen, heard, and valued in our school community.
